God's Providence in the coming of Christ
Galatians 4:4-5

Preparing For Sunday:

School is in session! This Sunday we enter history class to consider the unique historical setting of Christ’s arrival. Why did He come when He did? Was there a strategic purpose? Galatians 4:4 says, “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son…” With everything happening in the world at that time, we will conclude that Jesus providentially came at the perfect time. Such providence in preparation should cause us to consider if we have adequately prepared our hearts for His arrival. See you Sunday!

God's Providence in Ruth, A plan for Redemption
Ruth 3:12-13, 4

Preparing For Sunday:

How have you experienced God’s redemption in your life? The word “redemption” appears 23 times in the book of Ruth, which shows it is a major theme. Just as Boaz was under no obligation to step in and redeem Ruth, so also Jesus was under no obligation to step in and redeem us. In both cases, the love of God was the motivator. In this final week of studying the book of Ruth, we will be amazed by the beautiful connection between God’s providence and God’s redemption. I hope to see you on Sunday!

Faith & Favor, Ruth 2
Ruth 2:2-23

Preparing For Sunday:

How did you and your spouse meet? We often hear stories like, “We just happened to run into each other.” Ruth and Boaz have the same story! “Ruth just so happened to be gleaning in the field of Boaz.” This is not a coincidence but another example of God’s providence. As a new character in our story, Boaz is a type of Christ who beautifully portrays the person of Jesus. In provision, protection, and redemption, his actions lead us to love our Savior all the more. Join us on Sunday to see the Gospel on full display!

God's Providence In Ruth: Return To The Lord
Ruth 1:6-22

Preparing For Sunday:

Have you found it true that God often lavishes His grace upon us even before we repent? Romans 2:4 says that God’s kindness is meant to lead us to repentance. In our study of Ruth, after finding both Naomi and Ruth battered by their loss, suddenly, kindness begins to return to their lives. The winter storm passes and again, there’s a clear sky! In all this, God’s heart is that Naomi and Ruth return to Him with their whole heart. Join us Sunday to consider how you may need to return to the Lord with your whole heart.

Patience Amidst Providential Pain
Ruth 1:1-5

Preparing For Sunday:

This Sunday, we will begin a mini-series on the Providence of God in Ruth. This short book puts the providence of God on full display, yet it does so through normal, everyday occurrences. Our lives similarly often lack the evidence of the miraculous, yet God’s activity is just as involved. This week, we will look at just the first five verses of the book. Here, we see the painful side of God’s providence. No one wants the pain, but here we find God’s call to a patient to trust in His good purposes. Join us Sunday to be surprised by hope in the midst of despair!

The Story Of Joseph, Part 2
Genesis 45-50

Preparing For Sunday:

This Sunday, we continue our two-week study of Joseph. Last week, we studied God’s preparation for providence; this week, we will study God’s purpose for providence. We will see that God is always working deliverance around us and transformation within us. While this is difficult to discern, we discover it nonetheless to be true, especially in the story of Joseph! What’s most essential is our response to God’s providence. In Joseph’s case, God’s providence was the impetus of his forgiveness—namely, his forgiveness of his brothers. We all need to reckon with a response to God’s providence. Join us Sunday to consider how!

Rags to Riches; The Story of Joseph, Part 1
Genesis 39-41

Preparing for Sunday:

This Sunday, we transition from a topical study to an exegetical study of God’s providence. We will begin by looking at the life of Joseph for the next two weeks. Joseph was a man of exemplary character—one with whom the Spirit of God dwelled (Gen. 41:38) and one whom God was with (Gen. 39:2-3). When his life fell apart through betrayal and lies, it was his steady confidence in God’s promises that produced his integrity. Joseph is a wonderful encouragement for us. When God’s providence is hard to perceive, we must look through the fog to see the clarity of God’s promises. Invite a friend, and join us on Sunday for this fascinating story of hope in the darkness!

God's Providence Over Satan & Demons
Ephesians 2:1-9

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at “God’s Providence Over Satan and Demons.” We’ve spent a lot of time considering God’s will in His providence, but how does this relate to the opposing will of Satan? The Bible says that Satan wants to steal, kill, and destroy, so how do we keep ourselves from his destructive will and instead within the perfect will of God? Join us this Sunday as we look at Jesus’ disarming of Satan at the cross and our ultimate victory in Him!

God's Providence over Kings & Kingdoms
Daniel 4:28-37

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at “God’s Providence Over Kings and Kingdoms.” When we look at the world in which we live, we are often disappointed by the decisions of the rulers over us. We look for justice and find a compromise. We look for morality and find misery. This Sunday, we will be reminded of Jesus’ kingly rule! We will consider the purpose of earthly kingdoms and our longing for God’s Kingdom. The great hope is that with Jesus, all things will be made new.

God's Providence over life & death
1 Corinthians 15:51-58

Preparing for Sunday:
Have you given much thought to your own future death? To what degree does a fear of death control the way you live? Few things better inform and encourage us regarding our own mortality than God’s providence over life and death, which will be our theme for this coming Sunday. I wonder how you might live differently if you truly believed you are immortal until God’s mission for you on earth is complete? Come join us on Sunday for this stirring study of God’s complete sovereignty over our lives. My hope is that it motivates you to greater security and greater boldness!

God's Providence over Nature
Psalm 104:24-33

Preparing for Sunday
As we continue our series on the Providence of God, we turn to God’s Providence Over Nature. When we look at the world around us, we are more prone to see the workings of science than the workings of a great God. This is how our culture has trained us. Yet the Bible teaches us to see God’s detailed involvement in the most insignificant things. For instance, Psalm 104:14 says, “He causes the grass to grow.” That’s intriguing and intricate involvement! This Sunday, we will see how God’s providence over nature prompts us to respond. I look forward to seeing you then!

God's Glory in God's Providence
Isaiah 43:1-7

Preparing for Sunday
This Sunday, we continue our new Fall series on God’s Providence. We defined God’s providence last week as His pervasive and purposeful sovereignty. This basically means that God is powerfully working in every situation to bring about His wise, good, and perfect plans. Wow! There is so much relief that comes from learning to trust God’s providence in hard situations.

This Sunday, we will examine God’s primary purpose for everything He does: His own glory. The beautiful truth is that God’s glory and our good are not at odds! They mutually work together! Come join us on Sunday to find out how you can live for God’s glory and also experience your greatest good!

Trust His Providence
Ephesians 1:3-12

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we begin a new Fall series on the Providence of God. Allistair Begg once said, “The providence of God is the foundation of all our security; it is this which gives us comfort in the face of difficulty.” We all want security and comfort when faced with trying times. It’s often the worst of tragedies that tempt us to distrust God’s goodness and control. We wrestle with chaos, chance, and Satan himself having the upper hand of true control. But throughout this series, and starting this week, we will see that God is still in control and intimately involved in the nitty-gritty details of all human pain. His providence is personal. Join us on Sunday to be encouraged!

The Ordinances

Baptism

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we will continue our two-part study on the ordinances of the church. Last week, we looked at the Lord’s Supper, and this week we will look at baptism. What makes baptism such a beautiful picture of the Gospel? Why does Christ command it? Does it play a part in my salvation? Come this Sunday to find answers to these questions and more. And if you feel convicted after the message to pursue baptism yourself, I or one of the elders would love to talk with you!

The Lord's Supper

Preparing For Sunday:
For the next two weeks, we will consider the two ordinances Christ left us to follow: the Lord’s Supper and baptism. This week, we will consider the Gospel-rich beauty of the Lord’s Supper (i.e., Communion). Why is it important that Jesus told us to remember His death and to do so specifically with Communion? What are we supposed to gain from this experience? How do we prepare our hearts to receive it? In an age when it’s so easy to overlook this essential practice, join us this Sunday to regain an appreciation for this act and an even greater awe of what it symbolizes!

When Anxiety Attacks
Philippians 4:10-23

Preparing For Sunday:
In our final Sunday in the book of Philippians, Paul closes out his final appeal in chapter 4:10-23. He addresses our need to trust God’s sufficiency and to grow in our generosity. In many ways, these two are connected: As we become more content in God’s sufficient grace, we grow to trust Him to be more generous to others. Paul calls this contentment a secret — something we couldn’t know about apart from Christ. Join us Sunday for this encouraging message from God’s Word!

When Anxiety Attacks
Philippians 4:4-9

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we look at what we must do when anxiety attacks. Some of us struggle with worry more than others, yet Jesus says the foundation of all worry is a lack of trust. Rather than embracing God’s promises, we are prone to question God’s promises. In so doing, we become consumed with defeating thoughts and endless scenarios of negativity. Join us on Sunday as we look at Philippians 4:4-9 to find God’s peace in our problems and God’s answers in our anxiety.

Pressing on in Hope
Philippians 3:12-21

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday we will look at Philippians 3:12-21 to see the results of belonging to Jesus. Being in the family of God transcends the present moment; it impacts our past, present, and future! We tend to drag the baggage from our past into the present and project negativity onto our future. In this passage, the Apostle Paul exhorts us to forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead! As Christians, our past is forgiven and our future is bright! Join us on Sunday for this encouraging talk on the blessings of belonging to Jesus!

The Surpassing Worth of Knowing Jesus
Philippians 3:1-11

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday we come to a crucial section of the book of Philippians. In chapter 3:1-11, Paul unpacks how the purpose of his life changed when Christ converted his soul. Like some of us, Paul had much to boast about in terms of worldly accomplishments, yet the Gospel showed him it was all a wash. His earthly trophies went from significant to worthless and Jesus went from worthless to significant. As a result, the way he viewed his life was significantly altered. I hope you can join us as we consider how the Gospel changes what we hold dear and gives us power to see it through in our lives.

Gospel-Centered Friendship
Philippians 2:19-30

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at the value of having a few good friends. Paul had good friends in Timothy and Epaphroditus. These friends brought him joy, courage, and enhanced ministry. They were with him in his high times and his low times. They understood him well enough to know how to best help him. Do you have friends like that? More importantly, are you a friend like that to others? Join us this Sunday as we look at how to be a good friend from Philippians 2:19-30 and to be encouraged by the friendship of Jesus.

Grumbling Gains Nothing
Philippians 2:14-18

Preparing For Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at an often-overlooked sin. Jerry Bridges calls it a “respectable sin” — a sin that is often tolerated and given trite treatment. The sin I’m referring to is our proclivity to complain, to grumble, to murmur. This was even an issue in the Philippian church that negatively affected their witness within their lost world (Phil 2:14-18). The same is true of us, probably more than we realize — our negative attitudes often negate the power of our witness to the lost. They also say a lot about our lack of trust in God as our Father. Join us on Sunday as we address how this issue can be transformed into an attitude of joy and contentment in Christ!

Who's At Work Here
Philippians 2:12-13

Preparing for Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at only two verses: Philippians 2:12-13. These verses are easy to understand but hard to make sense of how they work together. Rather than getting caught up in the minutiae, the essential point is that God is working in our working. The Bible says that apart from Christ, all our righteous deeds are like filthy rags (Is 64:6). In other words, they can have no fruit-producing effect if we aren’t connected to the vine (Jn 15:5). It’s essential that you and I connect ourselves to the goodness of Jesus in order for His good work to be produced in our lives. Come join us on Sunday for this important reminder to remain in Him!

Humility Like Christ
Philippians 2:1-11

Preparing for Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at some of the most famous verses in Scripture: Philippians 2:1-11. Here we see the call to humility through the example of Jesus Christ. None of us are naturally humble. Since the root desire of our fallen flesh is to make ourselves “like god,” our attitude results in prideful independence. We deceive ourselves into believing we are sufficient and successful on our own. Yet the in-breaking of Christ teaches us otherwise. Through the profound suffering and sacrifice of Jesus, we are not only freed from sin but challenged to follow His example. Join us this weekend to consider further how "you might decrease, and He might increase” to the glory and praise of the Father!

Walk Worthy
Philippians 1:27-30

Preparing for Sunday:
Following this, we will continue our series in Philippians 1:27-30. Hey, we’ve made it through the first chapter! Our focus will be on the issue of hypocrisy. In our flesh, we are naturally inclined to pretend we are better than we really are in order to get praise. Sadly, some of us may even have a hidden double life, a particular sin that we’ve allowed to fester in the shadows. This eats at us on the inside while we continue to put up a facade of righteousness on the outside,

The Apostle Paul charges us in v.27 to live our lives in a manner worthy of the Gospel. This entails all of our life falling in line with the Gospel. What we will also see is the One who came to dismantle our hypocrisy and deliver us from its deception. I hope you can join us as we discern our own hypocrisy, small or great, and discover God’s grace to free us!

Living On Earth; Longing For Heaven
Philippians 1:19-26

Preparing for Sunday:
This Sunday, we will look at Philippians 1:19-26. Our big question will be, “How do we keep the balance between living on earth responsibly and longing for Heaven ultimately?” We will consider what our ultimate motivation for living should be and why it is that Christ hasn’t yet taken us to be with Him. What specific purpose might Christ have for you while you remain on earth? Join us on Sunday to learn more and seek to apply it!

Opposition & Opportunities
Philippians 1:12-18

Preparing for Sunday:
This Sunday, we jump back into our verse-by-verse study of the book of Philippians. We will look more closely at chapter 1:12-18. We will wrestle with the purpose of opposition and how that purpose changes our response to opposition. It’s hard for us to see or simply believe God has a greater plan for our lives. What often appears to us to be a mess of knots is just the back view of the tapestry God is weaving. Our challenge is letting go of our plans for our glory so God can execute His bigger plan for His glory. This Sunday, we will see how the Apostle Paul responded to the opposition in his life. What we will find is that in every form of opposition, there is an opportunity for the Gospel. I hope to see you this Sunday!
